What size power station for RV boondocking?
Off-grid in an RV, the question is not what can run, but what you can put back. Recharge is the constraint, and it decides the size far more than your appliance list does.
Every figure on this page is computed from the WattPicks dataset (107 models from 12 brands, all read from the manufacturers' own product pages). We do not test power stations, so nothing here is a measurement of ours.
Start from the recharge, not the load
In a house you can refill from the wall. Boondocking, you refill from solar, an alternator, or a generator run. If the daily energy you use is larger than the daily energy you can put back, the system is a countdown regardless of how big the battery is.
So size the array and the input ceiling first, then size the battery to carry you through a cloudy day.

What our dataset says about the big end
We track 47 models at 1,500 Wh and above. Across them, cost runs 0.29–1.00 per watt-hour and portability 21.3–57.3 Wh per pound — the second figure matters less in an RV, which is why this is one of the few situations where the heaviest, cheapest-per-watt-hour units are the right answer.
The sizing method
- Estimate daily energy: list each appliance, its watts, and the hours per day it actually runs.
- Add 20% for inverter losses and for the days your estimate is optimistic.
- Size the battery for two days of that, so one cloudy day does not end the trip.
- Size the solar array to replace one day of use in about four good sun hours.
- Check the station’s maximum solar input before buying panels larger than it can accept.
Expansion is the RV-specific answer
The units suited to RV use tend to be the expandable ones: start with what you need, add a battery later rather than replacing the whole station. Related to that, capacity and recharge figures are the ones to compare across models, and both are in the dataset behind every ranking on this site.

How big a power station do I need for van life?
Most van builds land in the 1,000–2,000 Wh range for a fridge, laptop and lights, with recharge sized to at least match daily use. The recharge side is what usually decides it.
Can I charge a power station from the vehicle alternator?
Some units accept a 12V or alternator input, often at a modest rate. Check the input options on the model page — this is one of the differences between a car-camping unit and an RV one.
