WattPicks is an independent third-party comparison site for portable power stations and solar generators. Named editors — see the authors directory — normalize manufacturer specifications, publish the math that makes them comparable, and write fit guidance for camping, RV, home outages, and solar recharge.

Portable power marketing mixes continuous watts with surge, nameplate Wh with usable Wh, and panel kits with stations. Buyers comparing 120 published models across 34 brands need one schema, clear fit language, and a place that will say when a unit is the wrong tool.

WattPicks exists to do that work in public: one dataset, derived ratios (cost per watt-hour, Wh per pound, charge rate), scenario guides, head-to-head comparisons, and Power Fit runtime estimates — all grounded in published specs and labeled editorial judgment, not invented lab scores.

Every public ranking or shortlist on WattPicks follows the same editorial rules:

• Published specs first. Capacity, continuous AC output, weight, solar input and chemistry come from the manufacturer’s own page or listing fields we can re-check. Missing values stay blank — we do not impute “typical” Wh.
• Derived metrics are labeled as math. $/Wh, Wh/lb and similar ratios are computed from those inputs. If an input is missing or fails plausibility gates, the model drops out of that ranking dimension.
• Fit over hype. Guides and versus pieces answer who a station is for and who should skip it (fridge surge, CPAP overnight, weekend camping weight, whole-home transfer-switch jobs a portable unit cannot cover).
• Owner voices are attributed, not invented. Themes come from manufacturer-published reviews we quote verbatim — see VOC below.
• No pay-for-rank. Affiliate links never change a stored specification or a computed ranking input. We can recommend against a SKU while still linking to it.

Figures on WattPicks come from these layers — not from a single scraped marketplace dump:

1. Manufacturer product pages — primary source for nameplate capacity, continuous output, weight, solar input, chemistry and warranty claims. Quotes are stored as evidence so values can be re-checked.
2. Retail listing fields — list price snapshots, model numbers and offer URLs for Check Price links. Listing marketing titles are not treated as the product identity when they conflict with a verified model.
3. Normalized catalogue — the schema Stations, rankings and Power Fit read at build time. Verified-spec flags and physical plausibility gates keep accessory/charger pollution out of decision tools.
4. Derived ratios — computed only from verified or catalogue-backed inputs; never presented as independent lab measurements.

WattPicks does not run a review submission form and does not invent testimonials. Owner ratings and quotations come from review nodes manufacturers publish on their own product pages (and related listing packs stored in our catalog).

• Verbatim only — we store and display the published body; we do not paraphrase mid-sentence or merge two owners into one quote.
• Attribution required — a review without a published author name is discarded for quotation.
• Themes, not star averages alone — articles summarize repeated owner themes (UPS switchover, phantom drain, solar reality) and prefer critical reviews when mixed feedback exists.
• Silence is reported — if a vendor publishes an average with no review text, we say the text is unavailable rather than fabricating sentiment.

Limits: vendors choose what to publish. We can guarantee a quotation matches the source we stored; we cannot guarantee the sample represents every owner. See also How to read owner reviews.

WattPicks earns affiliate commissions when you follow a product link and make a qualifying purchase. That relationship is disclosed at the top of this page, near article buy links, in the site footer, and on the affiliate disclosure page. It does not change dataset values: specifications are collected from vendor sources by pipeline, and rankings are computed from that dataset.

Where a product is a poor fit, we say so while still linking — fit-led guidance, not commission-led ranking.
