Can a portable power station run a mini fridge?
Yes — and it is the single most common reason people buy a mid-size station. The trap is that a fridge is not a constant load, so the arithmetic people use is wrong in both directions.

The compressor is the hard part
A compressor fridge draws a modest running wattage and a much larger starting wattage each time the compressor kicks in. That start-up spike is the figure a station has to survive, and it is why a unit with plenty of capacity can still trip its inverter on a fridge.
Check the surge rating against the fridge’s locked-rotor or start-up current, not its running watts.

Why the run-time maths goes wrong
A fridge cycles. In a mild climate it may run a third of the time; in a hot car it may run most of the time. Sizing on the running watts multiplied by 24 hours gives a scary number that is far above reality; sizing on a vague "fridges are efficient" assumption gives a number that fails on the first hot day.
The honest approach is to size for a worst case you can accept — a hot day, running most of the cycle — and treat the mild-weather performance as the bonus.
What people actually use
In our dataset the 1,000–1,500 Wh band holds 21 models, and it is the band most buyers land on for a fridge plus everything else. Across that band, cost runs 0.33–0.70 per watt-hour and portability 24.5–50.6 Wh per pound.
Two things decide it beyond capacity: how efficiently the fridge itself runs (a 12V compressor fridge is far easier to run than a mains fridge through an inverter), and whether you can recharge daily from solar.
The rule of thumb that works
- Run a 12V compressor fridge from the DC output where it has one — inverter losses are real.
- Size for the surge, not the running watts.
- Plan to recharge daily; a fridge that empties a station over two days is a recharge problem, not a capacity problem.
- Pre-cool the fridge on mains power before you leave.

It depends on ambient temperature and how often it is opened. Rather than trust a figure, treat the duty cycle as the unknown: look for a station with enough surge to start the compressor, then size capacity generously and plan a daily recharge.
Can I run a full-size fridge during an outage?
A household fridge draws more and cycles differently. Check both the surge and the daily energy, and be aware that a full-size fridge is usually a job for a larger station plus expansion batteries, or a generator.
