500Wh vs 1000Wh power station: how to choose

Doubling capacity does not double what you can run — it doubles how long you can run it. Whether that is worth the weight and the money depends on which of those two things is your problem.

Every figure on this page is computed from the WattPicks dataset (107 models from 12 brands, all read from the manufacturers' own product pages). We do not test power stations, so nothing here is a measurement of ours.

What actually changes

  • Runtime, roughly in proportion — with the caveat that a bigger unit often has a bigger inverter too, which can burn the extra capacity faster.
  • Weight, which goes up more than proportionally in some ranges and less in others.
  • Output, which sometimes does not change at all: a 1,000 Wh unit with the same inverter as the 500 Wh version cannot run a bigger load, only run it longer.

The two bands in our data

We track 13 models between 500 and 1,000 Wh and 21 between 1,000 and 1,500 Wh.

In the 500 Wh band, cost runs 0.30–1.20 per watt-hour and portability 20.0–51.8 Wh per pound. In the 1,000 Wh band it is 0.33–0.70 per watt-hour and 24.5–50.6 Wh per pound.

The overlap is the point: the cheapest-per-watt-hour model in the small band can beat the worst in the large band. Band alone does not determine value.

The decision

Choose the smaller band if you are weight-limited — backpacking, motorcycle, carrying it any distance — and your loads are light. Wh per pound is the spec to rank on, and the lighter units are consistently at the small end.

Choose the larger band if you are duration-limited: a fridge overnight, a laptop for a working week, a CPAP machine for eight hours. Then the question becomes whether you can carry it, not whether it is efficient.

And the option people forget

An expandable mid-size unit can grow into the larger band later without replacing the whole purchase. If you are unsure which band you need, that is usually a better answer than guessing high.

Is 1,000Wh enough for camping?

For lights, phones and a laptop, comfortably. Add a compressor fridge and you are planning a daily recharge; add an electric kettle and neither band is enough.

Is a 1,000Wh station too heavy to carry?
