Portable power station vs home generator
This is not a watts question. A modest generator out-powers any station we track. The real difference is whether the outage lasts hours or days, and whether you can run a generator where you live.
Every figure on this page is computed from the WattPicks dataset (107 models from 12 brands, all read from the manufacturers' own product pages). We do not test power stations, so nothing here is a measurement of ours.
The fundamental trade
- A generator converts fuel into unlimited runtime. Run time is limited only by how much fuel you store, and it is loud, emits exhaust, and needs exercise and oil changes.
- A station stores a fixed amount of energy. It is silent, indoor-safe and maintenance-free, but when it is empty it is empty until something recharges it.
- A generator can be refuelled mid-outage; a station needs mains power, solar, or a generator to refill.
Where a station wins
Short outages, apartments and anywhere a generator cannot legally or practically run. A station also covers the loads a generator handles badly: sensitive electronics, CPAP machines, and anything you want to keep running through the night without a noise complaint.
Units in our dataset with a published UPS switchover figure number 42; that sub-20 ms behaviour is what keeps a desktop or a modem alive through a blip, and no generator does it at all.

Where a generator wins
Multi-day outages, heating loads, well pumps and anything that needs to run continuously for a long time. Adding a second battery to a station is expensive; adding a jerry can to a generator is not.
The combination people actually use
A generator for the long tail of an outage plus a station for the loads that must not blink. The station rides through the seconds while the generator is started, and covers the overnight hours when running a generator is antisocial.

Can a power station replace a generator completely?
For short outages and light loads, often yes. For multi-day outages or heavy loads like heating and pumps, no — the energy has to come from somewhere, and a station cannot refuel itself.
Which is cheaper per watt-hour of backup?
A generator, by a wide margin, because it converts fuel rather than storing energy. A station is bought for silence, indoor use and instant switchover.
